ECOLOGY & EVOLUTION
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEBio) at the University of Virginia comprises a closely interacting group of labs that work across the spectrum of biological organization. We share common interests in understanding how plants, animals, and microbes interact with their environment and the processes by which populations, communities, and species evolve.
UVA's EEBio group has particular strengths in population biology, evolutionary and quantitative genetics, natural and sexual selection, disease ecology and life-history evolution. Many students and PIs conduct their fieldwork at Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS), but others work at field sites closer to Charlottesville and around the world. The community of researchers and students at MLBS extends the interactions of the EEBio group to include a number of research groups from campuses throughout North America and provides specialized graduate-level courses from nationally renowned faculty. We foster a culture of independence and collaboration among our graduate students. Many students pursue their own research questions in systems different than those their advisors study, and weekly colloquia offer an opportunity for the entire group, including colleagues in Environmental Sciences and other departments, to interact and discuss research in an informal setting.
Students interested in joining the EEBio group should contact faculty members in their areas of interest and visit the Graduate page for more information on graduate studies in the Department of Biology.
