MENTOR DEADLINES

Grade Recommendations Please e'mail Dr. Kretsinger,rhk5i, your recommended grade (All Independent Research courses are graded, A - F) as well as a brief evaluation of the student's progress and performance.  For Summer Session e'mail recommended grades to Dr. Kittlesen, djk3w, by the last day of term.

  • Due Friday, December 16, 2011 for Fall Semester Students
  • Due Friday, May 11, 2012 for Spring Semester Students

Publications Updates: 

We maintain a list of all publications that include Biology undergraduates as authors. If you know of any, please send the complete reference information for the publication- authors, title, and journal- to Robert Kretsinger.                        

STUDENT DEADLINES                 

Due Friday, September 16th, 2011 (Fall Semester Students ONLY):

Independent Research Outline Deadline for ALL 4911-4918 students' outlines of the research proposed for the term. The half page report should include goals, significance, approach, and methods to be used for the research project. A hard copy is due to your instructor of record.  The instructor of record for students working with mentors outside the Biology Department is Dr. Robert Kretsinger.  Your outlines, prepared in consultation with your mentor, should be e'mailed to  Dr. Kretsinger (rhk5i).           

Due Friday, December 16th, 2011 (Fall Semester Students ONLY):       

Independent Research Paper. It the policy of the Undergraduate Research program that a paper of about 1500 words, exclusive of illustrations, describing the background of the project, the rationale, the relevant methods, the student's contributions, and the general conclusions should be prepared by the student at the end of each term for the mentor of record (the faculty member under with whom you are registered for independent research). Papers for 4911 often emphasize background and rationale. Papers for 4912-4918 may refer to material in earlier papers. Students with mentors outside of Biology please e'mail the paper to rhk5i@virginia.edu

Mentor Evaluations (Students with Non-Biology Mentors) E'mail  a very brief evaluation of your research experience and mentor to Kretsinger, rhk5i. This will help to improve the program for future research students and mentors., due 16/Dec, 201:

The corresponding deadlines for submissions of proposals and of reports for the spring term are Friday, Febrary 3rd and Friday, May 11th.

Research Poster Information due for Optional Poster Contest The Distinguished Majors Symposium will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012. During the Symposium, there will be a poster session open to all students enrolled in BIOL 4911-4918 Independent Research. There will be a cash prize for the best poster. To enter a poster in the contest, send the title and the author(s) of the poster to Dr. Kretsinger. Posters may not exceed 3 x 4 feet. Format is as the student (and lab) judge appropriate. Posters should be taped to the corridor wall near Gilmer 166.  Students with mentors outside of Biology: If you present a poster at the Symposium, you will not be required to turn in an Independent Research Paper. Students with mentors in the Department of Biology: Please honor your mentor's guidelines regarding a report.
