| MOLECULAR GENETICS, CELL & DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY | ||||

The next horizon for cell and developmental biologists is to understand how proteins and sets of proteins are assembled and integrated to produce function. Research carried out by the Molecular Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology faculty explores the molecular mechanisms of cell function at the organismal level (morphogenesis and global gene expression) to the subcellular (signaling, cytoskeletal dynamics and trafficking). Fundamental questions of how cells function within tissues, interact with their environments, avoid pathogens and become diseased are addressed using genetic, cellular, biochemical, structural, bioinformatic and high-throughput functional genomic approaches. Close collaborations with faculty in the Schools of Medicine and Engineering emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to integrate discoveries in biology with development of new therapeutics and applications.
